What is a patio? How will you be able to make a green patio design without spending more? All this you can learn by reading this article.

The alteration space between the yard and your house is called the patio. The patio design will solely depend on your tastes and preferences. The gamut can be run from a very stylish open-air yard to an out-of-doors relaxing and entertaining room.

Whether you would like a highly elegant or a very simple design, a patio will indeed lengthen the living room of your house and will definitely create the central peak out your window.

Your patio design will greatly influence the ambience of the house as well as the emotions that the house will impart. It will also alter the corporal space in the house. This can be done through altering the focal view of the house while showing your personal artistry and guts.

The patio is under hardscapes. Hardscapes refers to the non-plant element of the design of the landscape. This hardscapes will influence a deal of a critical element on your landscaping garden projects.

In addition to this, combination of green plants and hardscapes will be a great ambience for an al fresco environment. This ambience will be very inviting not only to the family members but also to the friends that will visit your house. Through this way, the patio will be the place of functions. This will also appeal to the senses of everybody.

Here the factors and elements to consider in designing your patio: (1) the current view from the patio; (2) the weather conditions and climate change; (3) the different target points of the sun; and(4) the focal point.

When we talk about the focal point, this refers to the best part of the patio. Dull spots can be covered by adding water facet or flower cradles.

Arbors, Pergolas, and Loggias are the most known arrangement for a patio. These are used to (1) make a frame for your chosen point of interest; (2) build a very stylish gateway; (3) give protection for the elements; and (4) to give emphasis on one point of the patio.

These elements are the ways in which you can create a brawny outlook and also highlight a view of the frame you want.

Another to consider is the flooring. The flooring could be concrete, pavers, stone, or cast stone.

The most popular choice will be the concrete. It is the most popular because it is the longest lasting and the most affordable. It is also very flexible because it can be shaped. It can also be decorated with colors.

Pavers are the older charm of the world. Intricate patterns are generated from pavers. Cobblestones can also be generated. These pavers are affable to the environment.

Limestone, Slate, and Sandstone are the most common stones that are used in the flooring.

Another thing for the green patio design is the cast stone; these are brickworks that add functionality to the flooring.

Even though your area is limited, you have the advantage of making the most out of your patio. You also get the benefits with regards to reduced cost and being more creative. You will be glad to know that several people have successfully made their dream patios using a bit of their imagination. Here are some proven tips and tricks on how to design your small space.

Getting Things in Perspective

First of all, you need to know how much space exactly you are working with by taking a steel measuring tape and getting the right dimensions. This will help you plot your small patio design by giving you limitations and possibilities in terms of shape, size and materials to be used. Most weekend warriors get away with their dream designs since small areas usually can accommodate these. Decide the size of want, the shape, the style and influence as well as the materials.

You may want to consider a certain theme or influence to help you pick the right design. Italian and country are among the most popular ones especially if you have a lovely garden that can serve as a backdrop. Some of the recommended materials would be brick and concrete since these are durable and affordable. Other choices include natural stone like granite, marble, cobblestone and even timber. If you plan to use wood, it would be a good idea to have a ceiling which protects it from direct moisture and rain. Adequate drainage is also required to prevent immediate damage.

Research first the material before you purchase anything whether or not it would be good for your small patio overall. Start with the basics then work your way towards the style. Remember that a patio should be durable as well and resistant against external elements. Pick the right tones that compliment the rest of the house and slowly add the details and other decorations to make it look beautiful and attractive.

Experts’ Advice

A number of experts recommend a few design essentials to make your small patio as useful and nice as possible. Their number one advice is that size matters. Your patio should at least be able to accommodate the people who will regularly occupy the area. Check that any furniture and other fixtures comfortably fit into the space without any clutter and unneeded items. A few lounge chairs and a small table usually suffice most models. Second, if you’re building on a slope, you may be better off creating more than a single level. Steps are very aesthetic as well but make sure that the design is relatively safe to use.

Third, when trying to decorate and add accents, you will be able to bring out its beauty more by relying on natural elements like plants and water. Proper lighting will emphasize your patio at night. Use light fixtures that are both efficient and well-illuminating. You should also think about changing small patio decorations and designs after every season. Its maintenance requirements may change together with the climate so knowing the right techniques to keep materials strong will ensure longevity and eliminate emergency expenses. The idea is to treat your patio just the same way as you would with any other room in the house. Find the right design that you can clean and maintain regularly.

The outdoor version of your household, the patio is the perfect place to rest and relax with friends and families when the weather is at its best. During the warm seasons, kids would love to play on the lush greens of a landscaped patio, while the grown ups are busy talking on a couch under a cooling shade of a tree.

You must pick the right furniture for your patio to maximize its use. Benches, chairs, sofas, tables, and a bar set are just some of the furniture normally found in a well-designed patio. Here are some tips on how to decide the best furniture for it.

Take The Weather Into Account

Choosing your furniture should depend on the weather, especially when you’re in the rainy side of the world. The patio furniture that you pick out should be able to withstand the torments of heat and rain, while maintaining their individual quality.

Wooden furniture can withstand weather conditions but has to be treated regularly so that it won’t rot. Wicker-made patio furniture is the best choice if you want it to blend with the colors of nature. Since these kinds of furniture have undergone treatment to become durable, it is the perfect solution for both rain and heat.

Marble furniture for your patio is durable but very expensive. Wrought iron, however, is an inexpensive solution. Not only is it durable, it is also well-known to last for a very long time with fear of corrosion or rusts.

Bar Patio

Before you choose furniture for your patio, you have to decide on a style first. The purpose of a patio is mostly for recreation and relaxations, so you better target those that can do just that. For starters, you can go for bar patio furniture that can accommodate your family and friends in a variety of activities. This includes partying, picnic, or even a coffee time during light conversations.

These furniture styles are mostly sold in aluminum that can withstand corrosion and use, and are mostly sold in sets than per piece. However, aluminum furniture speaks of a modern design, so if you want to look for those that can blend in with the surroundings, then you can go for wicker ones instead.

The basic bar-type furniture for patios includes a single high-table, with elevated chairs all around it – around three or four per set. Another variation includes a wooden bar counter that can hold food and drinks with equal facility, and high chairs at the front like those you need in pubs.

Turn Your Patio Into A Dining Area

You can turn your patio into an extension of your dining room with the right furniture. In truth, many prefer to eat their lunches and dinner outside together with guest and family for added comfort and enjoyment.

Aluminum, wrought-iron, and wicker dining sets are the most popular choice. Varied designs from circular to long tables are readily available to suit your needs. Aside from chairs, other dining sets incorporate the use of cushioned sofas to improve both the style and comfort during these activities.

Where To Look?

If you don’t have the time to visit furniture shops or looking into magazines for ideas, the Internet is the best place to look for different patio furniture designs and styles that will suit your needs. Not only that, you can browse through their furniture online catalogs and be able to compare prices with others to give you the best deals for the best items.

Patio covers provide a little or shade or cover for those who want to enjoy the outside view, and can be inexpensive provided with the right materials. Of course there are dozens of patio cover ideas that are available everywhere on TV, the movies and even on the internet, even if they don’t notice it at first.

Patio covers are generally made of wood, while others can be a bit more creative like using small trees just high enough for a standard floor to ceiling height. Other man-made ones can be of plastic and such, but this is not recommended unless it fits the desired theme and category.

Some of the patio covers seen are usually the clever ones. One patio can be made to look like a vineyard over the brick-lain area, and added with ivy or the like (actual grapevines for those who can afford it) would have a more Italian feel to any patio. Other ways to make a patio even more colorful is to add a few hanging plants and the like, as if emulating the hanging gardens.

Some patio covers can be made with an eastern touch. For the Chinese and Japanese, layered tiles can create a more Oriental look to make it more elegant. Of course, it would mean total cover and shade, but not enough it would appear like a gazebo. Having a few cheap ornamental pieces like some Japanese statues and hanging bamboo mats would complete the effect.

Other construction materials for patio covers would also involve using bricks or even concrete columns for support. Some of the usual designs would be like Roman columns, added with the slatted cover around a good-sized patio for a more regal approach. Though not much decoration is needed, this would be perfect for homeowners who live in hot weather. Other support columns are made using stone or bricks for that sturdy feeling for any patio cover.

As for color, most patio covers are usually in its drab white. Of course this doesn’t undermine the patio cover’s true purpose, but the more popular ones are of earth tones that can capture the surrounding landscape as well. Making sure the desired color is being selected, it would be best to stick with the outer paint of the house, if not just white. There are a few patio covers that are left as is, with some varnished to give the patio a sheen look. Making sure the patio wouldn’t be a splinter-prone area, most carpenters would make sure to sand and smoothen the edges.

It wouldn’t be surprising if patio cover ideas may seem limited since the initial design of the patio cover is basically slatted. While other contractors would have roofed covers, they wouldn’t stray away from erecting a patio cover and mistaking it as a gazebo.

The initial cost depends on the size of the patio itself, and this would involve the kind of wood needed. Consulting a contractor would help a homeowner determine the initial cost (usually no more than $300) for a simple patio cover of 10 feet in diameter. With a variety of designs, motifs as well as a few decorations to make the patio cover a great investment to relax under, these patio cover ideas would surely be one of the ways to make the patio a definite place to relax.

Patios are all about being one with nature, and being surrounded by nature as it helps create a more relaxing atmosphere for both homeowner and guest. Of course it wouldn’t be a patio without a few patio decorating ideas that would be in tune with the surrounding vegetation.

The size of the patio, as well as the area surrounding it would determine the number of decorations that would fit within and around the patio. Of course it wouldn’t be a patio if it has something out of place, like a tool shed or the like. Greenhouses are just fine as long as it doesn’t obstruct the view. Patio decorating ideas are created to make the patio owner feel more at home aside from the house itself.

The first part when it comes to decorating is to ensure the patio and its surroundings is clear of any unnecessary litter, especially for dead leaves. It’s proper maintenance that should be followed before starting any decorating.

Hammocks are the best thing to start with, and never without one near a patio. It can come with all shapes and sizes, and materials that would allow the homeowner to just approach and take a nap to pass the lazy afternoon away. More than just a decoration, they would likely think of it as a lure for the sleepy patio owner.

The furniture may determine the patio, and the design will allow anyone to spend longer hours on it. Some of the most popular furnishings for any patio would be metal and rattan. Rattan is a more favored choice since it would feel much more comfortable than metal, which has a tendency to either heat up or freeze depending on the temperature. As long as there is enough space to move the furnishing around, there shouldn’t be a problem.

This also include tables, usually a glass topped metal table with a small potted plant for a little added effect. Foam is out of the question since the furniture needs to be durable enough to withstand just about any temperatures as well as the climate involved. A marble chessboard would also be good for those who wish to pass time playing chess, and would serve well as a makeshift table to bring in some drinks when not in use.

Other patio decorating ideas would include potted plants of anything they like as long as it’s within season. This would also include some hanging plants for people with a roofed patio that would enhance the relaxation factor a few times. Naturally, there are some plants that may be considered as misplaced, like adding a rosebush in a wooded area. It would be advisable to stick to the theme when it comes to the patio and where it is located. Beach patios would do well by placing some wind chimes nearby that would add as a pleasant distraction for the ears as the sea breezes through the patio, as well as a few shells on the table if available.

Some manufacturers sell furniture meant for patios and such, but it would also save money to just look around to see if they have a sturdy enough piece of furniture to resist the elements, then the buying would come later. Patio decorating ideas are for those who want to have a peace of the indoors at the outdoors.

There are a number of plants and ways to make a patio a lot more closer to nature, as well as giving it a more home feel when it comes to patio garden ideas. Numerous would be the main word, and a few have been the most proven.

For garden patios, simplicity does not mean mundane in any sort, but the concept of a patio should be all about the plants that is needed in order to achieve the desired effect.

Plants would come in all shapes and sizes, but the ease in maintenance would allow a better chance for a patio garden to flourish. For some Americans who have managed to erect a patio on a cliff with a great view wouldn’t need to pay attention on the ground that sits on it. For most Americans, they would think that having grass on every lawn is a mandatory aspect, but that is not entirely the case. A few trees would suffice in this case, but grass does not always make a patio garden since most patio owners would only be concern on what is surrounding it at eye level. This is an important part when it comes to patio garden ideas, that minimum maintenance, which would also include mowing the lawn on a weekly basis, would help create a balance.

Foliage and hedges need not be tall when it comes to having a patio garden, thus to ease on maintenance needed. Usually, any hedge just below 4 feet would be perfect for a perimeter around the patio, and not too tall that would obstruct a scenic view where the patio is located. Hanging and potted plants may be considered as decoration, but this will bode well for the nature lover, especially where homes that may lack some of the plants homeowners would want.

Beachside patios tend to be a bit more breathtaking, so does the number of plants needed that may take care of themselves after two years or so. Palm trees and tropical plants have a greater resistance towards heat, thus little water can be used. Of course this doesn’t excuse a patio owner to deprive the pants of water, but it will ease the garden work. Grass is not required, but it would be interesting to find a bit of the beach area by placing flagstones surrounded with sand to create a path.

Another patio garden ideas are for wooded areas. It tends to be a great place to have patios, especially when surrounded by trees and the like. Of course this wouldn’t be a problem when it concerns maintenance, but sometimes it does pay to have a shrub or two just for the feel of it. If needed, a bit of trimming like extended branches that have a tendency to fall on the patio area (especially on people) would be good. Clearing the area with unwanted plants like poison ivy and dead leaves, if patient enough, can enhance the quality of the patio.

While most ideas have come from people that add some plants in the surrounding area, mixing and matching doesn’t always work. Sometimes it helps to know if that person is either a summer or an autumn more of a fellow as they add the desired plants according to season. This way, a sense of uniformity would be effective, leaving just enough room for more patio garden ideas to full bloom.

Creating a patio for the first time can be an exciting experience for any home owner, given to the touch of creativity that can expand through the horizon. Of course the labor and cost would be something secondary, it would be a enriching experience, thus a few patio landscaping ideas should be in place.

First off is to know what kind of theme should be planned out, and this would only determine on where the homeowner is located. Patios are meant to be a place to relax outdoors, and what better way is to set the mood depending on the scenery. The material involve should be both aesthetically and functional, thus allowing the patio to be sturdy as well as good to look at.

When choosing an area for a patio, it would be best to start at a flat area of land. Of course it would be better for some if the patio is elevated, depending if the land has such a slope, otherwise a good load of digging, or just hiring a contractor would be in order. Better to just start with the basics for patio landscaping ideas. Common materials would be using bricks, along with some colorful stones to achieve the desired Tuscan-like effect. And with a little detailed work like adding a floral design on the patio cover would be an added plus to bring out it’s natural aura.

Plants are the main reason why just about every homeowner would want to create some patio landscaping ideas, and it would be best to know what sort of plants would be needed. Perennials would be best since they can last much longer even if it’s already passed the season. Having a few annual plants, such as flowers and the like would spruce up the patio. A manicured lawn or being surrounded by trees would be a good start when it comes to flora. Other ways when it comes to patio landscaping would be water, and the more the merrier like digging a small pond or a miniature waterfall for an added effect.

As for theme, there are practically dozens of ways that would be suitable for any American home Pool patios are the most common, yet the most easily sought after for those who want to have a place after taking a dip during the summer days. Just having a patio cover that also extends a little above a pool would be inviting for those who want to relax at the edge of the pool. Added with a few more plants surrounding the pool would definitely boost the desirability factor of the patio.

Most modern patios would also involve a bit of fusion that may come from different regions of the world. While some would prefer being original, others would allow something like having a few rocks that surround the patio, or better yet some terra cotta tiles that is similar in some parts to give it a more western feel.

In a way, patio landscaping ideas are no different from decorating a house, only limited to the number of things that are not needed outdoors, like a wide screen HDTV. Regardless, the main point of patio landscaping is to make sure the place is attuned to nature, giving a more relaxed feeling as the homeowner can count the minutes away with a peace of mind.

If you are one of them, start by getting some ideas online or from your neighbor’s backyard. You can also find useful ideas on home improvement magazines and books. Most of them contain illustration, step-by-step procedure, and the list of materials needed to create the exact patio design plan. This makes it easier for you to complete the project in case you decide to adapt a specific plan.

How to start?

Once you have found an inspiration patio design plan, fit it to the size of your future patio. You need not to copy everything that’s stated on the plan though. Employ some changes like using your preferred or existing patio furniture or substituting some materials that are more affordable or you think are more functional. But if you want to have an exact replica of your inspiration patio design plan, make sure that you follow each step and procedure of the plan. This is because each element in the design holds meaning and supports other elements that are present to the design. Either way the most important question you have to answer when creating a patio design plan is, “do I like the plan I made?”

What are the elements that must be present to the patio design plan?

Focal point. Focal point ranges from garden pieces such as trellises, birdbaths fountains, artificial lakes, little pool, and statues to colorful flowers and plants depending on the available space for your patio. Choose your focal point in line with the overall theme you want to achieve.

Lights. The simple yet effective way to enhance the mood and at the same time, make it livable and safe during nighttime is by installing lights around your patio. Places to install your lights are ceilings, trees, and patio covers, steps, walkways, plant bed, and at the focal point. Also install lights at strategic areas where it can cast shadows for more dramatic effect.

Cover. There are different options to cover your patio. Some covers are better for rain while some are better for shade. Other patio covers protect you from both rain and direct sunlight. Choose one depending on your necessity. Here are some patio covers you can use:

• aluminum patio covers
• arbors
• awnings
• corrugated metal roof
• gazebos
• offset umbrellas
• pergolas
• sail shades
• traditional roof
• trees
• trellis
• umbrellas

Furniture. Select the furniture for your patio depending on the available space and the how the space will be used. Your patio design plan should include where the furniture will be placed on the area.

Now that you know how to make your own patio design plan, you can already begin your project. Good luck!

Porch and patio serve different purposes. A porch welcomes the guest and gives visitors the first impression of your home. A patio serves as a place to rest and relax, and makes a venue for dining, entertainment, and other outdoor activities. Begin your porch and patio design by identifying the purposes of the areas.

Unlike designing the interior of the house which is limited to the 4 walls of the room, designing the porch and patio is more complicated as you have the outdoors environment to consider. But taking these 7 important design elements into account, constructing porch and patio design is made easier.

Theme. A particular theme sets the final look for your porch and patio. Before moving on to the construction plan, make sure that you have a identified and drawn specific theme to your design.

Cover and Canopies. There are lots of options for porch and patio covers and canopies - aluminum patio covers, arbors, awnings, corrugated metal roof, gazebos, offset umbrellas, pergolas, sail shades, traditional roof, trees, trellis, and umbrellas. Your choice should basically be between the protection from the sun and rain. Covers may be a permanent construction or movable covers.

Flooring. Depending on the theme or design you have, patio and porch flooring options widely vary. Prices also range from cheap to outrageously expensive. Some may last for a couple of years while others can last for a very long time. Popular choice for porch floorings are wood, tile, concrete, and brick while patio flooring options are stone, stone veneer, plain concrete, concrete pavers, brick, tile, stamped and colored concrete, and flagstone. When choosing what flooring to use, consider your budget, durability, and the overall appeal of the material.

Furniture. Picking the right furniture for your patio and porch should be based on comfort, purpose, and theme of the design. Basic types of patio furniture are tables (laminate top or glass top) and chairs. For patio furniture, you have swing, rocker, garden bench, and chaise lounge. Choose patio and porch furniture made from wicker, aluminum, iron, wrought iron, rattan, and wood (teak and cedar). One tip: Start with the basics and add new pieces over time.

Materials. A well-designed porch and patio basically will include the same materials used for the exterior for the rest of the home. This way, your patio and porch will appear as part of the home structure. Materials should withstand the elements and time. Choose materials based on strength, maintenance demand, colors and patterns, flexibility, reparability, and cost. To give you an idea, the strongest, easiest to replace, has a wide selection of colors, shape and size, and requires the least maintenance is paving stone. But it is also the most expensive. Concrete is the cheapest with moderate strength and maintenance requirement. Brick varies its strength depending on how it is made. It is prone to chipping but can be replaced easily.

Color. Multi-color palettes add life to the design. If you want to achieve a slight transition from the interior to the patio and porch, use the color you have on the walls of your interior.

Special features. Finally, depending on your taste, add a special feature to your patio and porch design. Some of your options are fountains, waterfalls, hot tubs, fireplace, and mini pool.

When creating a simple patio design from scratch or you remodeling your existing, one thing you should remember is not to be overly concerned with the available space. It doesn’t matter if your patio is small or large, what is important is you are able to maximize the whole area, bring together the elements properly of the design, and successfully achieve the exact emotion you want to feel.

Here are some ideas that will help you conceive the simple patio design you will admire for years to come:

The patio flooring design ideas.

There is a variety of options for patio flooring design: brick, stone, stone veneer, flagstone, stamped and colored concrete, plain concrete, concrete pavers, and tile.

Real stones are often expensive but will last longer and look natural than any other types of patio flooring.

Stone veneer offers the benefits of real stone but are relatively cheaper.

Pavers are less expensive and easy to install but they sometimes look manufactured.

Tiles are cheap and easy to install, and easy to replace when damaged; but tiles age quickly and require frequent maintenance.

Stamped and colored concrete often look just like bricks and stone. They are less expensive and increasingly popular.

Plain concrete is not always the most aesthetically pleasing but it is the most affordable option.

Bricks are not as expensive as stone and last a long time. It can be arranged in various patterns, thus achieving a preferred design.

Your final choice will come down on how you want your patio to look like. Simple design does not have to be dull and boring. If you think one type of material is not enough for the floor, try combining two or more types of flooring.

Simple Patio furniture ideas

Choosing the type of furniture for your simple patio design should be based on the purpose of your patio. Will it be used for outdoor grill and entertainment? Will it be used for party and social occasions? Or will it be used for dining and relaxing? Whatever the purpose of your patio is, you can start with a table and chairs or a long reclining chair. You can also customize the patio furniture according the space available.

Simple Light ideas

Installing different lights throughout around you patio is a simple way to set mood to the patio. It also keeps your patio safe and livable at night. Lights can be installed ceilings, trees, and patio covers, steps, walkways, plant bed, and at the focal point of your patio.

Simple focal point ideas

There are several focal point options depending on the size of the patio. For large space, choices range from trellises, birdbaths fountains, artificial lakes, little pool, and statues. For small patio, a bed of flower and plants can be the best option.

Again, a simple patio design does not have to be dull and boring. Simple means it has to be uncomplicated; lines should not be confusing; steps should not be very elaborate; plants should not have to be very expensive. A simple patio design should not contain just the basic furniture standing on a plain floor and shaded with any patio cover. Simple patio design means all the elements of a good patio are used properly.
